A Little Bit of History
The San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation was established in 1871. It is located in southeastern Arizona and encompases 1,834,781 acres. Like all other Indian Reservations, it had its own Indian Police or Tribal Police. In the early days of the reservations, Indian Agents hired tribal member to effect law and order according to Federal, agency, and treaty rules.
These were considered federally appointed policemen. The Indian police that killed Sitting Bull were of this kind. (Taken from Wikipedia) |
