Lincoln County is best known for the Lincoln County War (1878-1881)that was fought between two cattle barons.
Pat Garrett was elected as sheriff of Lincoln County in December 1880. A few months later, he and his posse capture Billy the Kid and two other outlaws. Billy is tried, found guilty, sentenced to hang, manages to kill two of his guards and escape. Pat Garrett finds Billy later in Fort Sumner, New Mexico and kills him. This is a replica of Pat Garrett's badge during the time he was sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico.
