In 1862, gold was discovered near Deer Lodge, Montana. Other discoveries were made in Bannack and Virgina City. Due to the lawlessness that prevailed in the gold rush area, Montana's Territorial Legislature requested funds for a prison. Deer Lodge was picked and the first convict was received on July 2, 1871. |
