The Union Pacific Railroad not only brought prosperity to Laramie City, it also brought unscrupulous ruffians to the area. The need for law and order plus a place to house the criminals was quickly recognized. The Wyoming Territorial Legislature passed a bill in 1869 for the construction of the prison. Built in 1872, the Wyoming Territorial Prison was the home for some of the Old West's most notorious outlaws such as Butch Cassidy. |
